The
concept for the ‘International Climate Challenge’
(ICC) project has been developed from earlier
work with schools in the UK, Kenya and India, that has
prioritised global education, education for sustainable
development and in particular, learning through sharing
North-South perspectives. Methodologies developed to
enhance learning in these areas focus on the exploration
of a theme or issue at the local level, extending to
understanding of the same issue from a global perspective.
The same methodologies also support enquiry-based learning,
opinion forming and action by the learner to help address
challenges or concerns encountered during the learning
process.
Issues such as health, education, culture and poverty
also connect closely to the overarching theme of sustainable
development. With an ever-increasing impact from global
warming and climate change, it is a logical progression
to move to encourage schools to begin to encompass a
climate change theme within their studies, connected
to sustainable development. This then has provided the
impetus for building an inter-country programme that
encourages the youth to think seriously about how climate
change impacts on their daily lives and for them to
come up with innovative solutions that help reduce the
effects of climate change on their local environments
and their communities. 5 Jr. Colleges in Pune are participating
in the pilot project from June 2008 and 50 colleges
from Pune, Mumbai and Ahmedabad will be involved from
March 2009.
