CDE
also manages the Gardens for Life project (GFL) in partnership
with The Eden Project, Cornwall UK and has now completed
various aspects of the project, namely the formation
and cultivation of food gardens in the schools and relating
the school gardens to the curriculum. In this phase
the children of 20 schools in Mumbai and Pune created
a patch of garden in their school premise and grew food.
They participated in all the activities from preparing
the beds to harvesting vegetables and fruits in their
own schools. The children also shared their experiences
with their counterparts in UK and Kenya through the
post and the website and visits. They also tried out
the science topics that have been developed by the project
in the Indian classrooms, participating in developing
new topics, relating local and global issues to the
curriculum. There are 72 schools and 75000 students
involved in GFL from UK, Kenya and India. In fact CDE
was involved in this project right from the inception
and design of the project and the proposal stage. Now
we are developing the Phase II of this project, which
will involve the 300 municipal schools in urban Pune
and Mumbai as mentor schools and 10 additional schools
from Khed Taluka in Rural Maharashtra. The first phase
of this project in India was being funded by Syngenta
Foundation Switzerland.
